Maher is a non-governmental organization (www.maherashram.org) that provides shelter and care to destitute women, children, men and undertakes community development programs in various villages near village Vadhu Budruk in central western India. These homes were started by Sr. Lucy Kurien in February 1997 after she witnessed a horrifying incident where in a man burned alive his pregnant wife. After this shocking incident in her life, Sr. Lucy started various projects for the down trodden, especially homes for battered women and children. It currently shelters more than 960 children, 87 men and over 350 destitute women housed in 46 different homes around Pune and outside. Maher runs 24 different projects simultaneously. Maher’s work has also expanded to other parts of India like Jharkhand, Kerala, Kolkata, Miraj and Ratnagiri. Maher is a duly registered NGO under Indian laws and has acquired special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UN-ECOSOC) in May 2017. Maher also implements other projects for slum development and village work like “Balwadis” or kindergarten, day care centers, self-help groups, village libraries, awareness programs, coaching classes for school drop- outs, environmental projects and vocational trainings.
Maher has won many awards, national and international. It has been rated as one of the top 10 NGOS in India by “India NGO Awards”. Maher is certified by Guidestar as a transparent organization and has been awarded the Seal of Transparency after due diligence being conducted by Guidestar. Sr. Lucy Kurien has been awarded for “Nari Shakti Puraskar Award 2015” for her outstanding contribution to women’s empowerment at the hands of the Honorable President of India at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi. On July 15th she has been awarded “Vanitha Woman of the Year Award 2016” by Malayala Manorama the leading News Paper of Kerala State and on Sept 1st she was awarded the best Social worker Mother Teresa Award by the St Joseph’s church Pushpagiri – Kerala and on 26th Feb Rotary International District 3211 has selected her as the best Social worker Award for the vocational Award winner 2017. On 23rd November Sister Lucy received the ‘Sri Sathya Sai Awards for Human Excellence’, in the category of ‘Unity of Religions’ for the year 2017 at Bangalore. On 31st Jan 2018 Sister Lucy received the Jijabhai Achivers Award. This award is the recognition for her distinguished contribution in the sphere of the welfare of destitute women. On the occasion of International Women’s Day 2018, the Women’s International Club – Pune have honored and awarded Sr. Lucy as the Woman of the Year.
